Quadratic was initially released on Github in 2022 to much fanfare. Since release, we have remained source-available and committed to remaining as open and transparent as possible.

Why is Quadratic source available?

Trust

First and foremost, Quadratic is source available to build trust. When you use Quadratic, you trust us with your data. We do not take that responsibility lightly. Having our source publicly available for review enables you and others to make sure we are doing the right things and that there is no funny business going on behind the scenes.

Community contributions

Is there a feature that you wish Google Sheets or Excel had? With Quadratic, you can contribute that feature to a mature spreadsheet application! We are always excited to review and accept community additions to our software. This should give you the feeling that with Quadratic, you will never hit a wall that can't be overcome.

Recruiting

Many of our current team members found Quadratic by looking at our source code on GitHub and contributed a feature before joining the team. Quadratic is fundamentally a technology company. Hiring and retaining the best developers is our core focus. Being source available makes this easier!

Why is Quadratic not fully Open Source?

Our mission is to build the best tool for understanding data. To achieve this mission, we must become a profitable business and continue to create the best software for decades. This enables us to continue developing Quadratic and actively improving it.

If we were to go fully open source under a permissive license, it would be much more difficult to build a business on top of Quadratic, which would decrease reinvestment in the future of the product—ultimately hurting our users.

We aim to provide Quadratic for free to hobbyists, educators, and researchers while retaining our rights to charge enterprises using Quadratic.
